Active in restructuring of the energy sector in
Eastern Europe
In the first years of its
existence the Company was most active in assisting the three
Baltic States in developing their energy sectors to meet the
requirements of EU and the new market economy in general.
Among several projects in Lithuania can be mentioned
training of managers in the Lithuanian district heating sector and
assistance to introduction of
mandatory municipal
energy planning in Lithuania. In Estonia the most significant
project was the development of a national strategy for
decentralised CHP plants, including the preparation of the first
biomass- fired CHP plant in Estonia. As to Latvia can be mentioned
assistance to introduce energy management system in public
buildings, national energy statistics and the monitoring of a
straw-fired demonstration heating plant. Within this period the
Company also provided various assistance to the Nordic Council of
Ministers in the RES area in the Baltic Sea Region. Further the
Company has been involved in
assistance projects in e.g. Russia,
Czech Republic, Poland, Serbia,
Uzbekistan and Romania.
Of recent projects can be
mentioned that ECNet coordinated
a Phare project in Romania dealing with technical and economic
assessment of renewable energy sources in Romania. Also in Romania
the Company assisted a private oil company in developing business
models in the RES market.
Market expansion in Asia
From 2002 the Company
expanded its activities to Asia and particularly to countries like
Thailand, Malaysia and the Maldives where several projects have
focused on developing and implementing framework conditions for
sustainable energy. In Thailand and Malaysia the Company had
several experts stationed permanently for a period of years
to assist governmental organisations. Among
other activities in Asia can be mentioned training of wind
and biogas project
developers in Philippines and Vietnam.
EU Promotion and research projects
Currently the Company is
active in developing the climate market involving geographical
areas like China, India, South-East Asia and Southern America.
This is primarily done within the EU sixth framework programme in
which the Company has been increasingly involved in recent years
including coordination of projects. Also within EU promotion
projects and especially within the Intelligent Energy Europe
Programme ECNet has been increasingly involved including
coordination of three projects. Through these projects ECNet has
got involved in most parts of Europe focusing on development of
sustainable energy communities and facilitation of RES and energy
efficiency investments. Ongoing projects deal with
ccoperation between European regions, implementation of an European energy campaign, training of
university students and assistance to municipalities in the EU
Covenant of Mayors process. It is also worth mentioning that ECNet
is assisting on EU major initiatives like the Sustainable Energy
Europe Campaign and Managenergy. Further the Company is involved
